How Much Sugar is actually in Your Favourite Fizzy Drink?

Whether your choice of fizzy drink is cola, ginger beer or grape Fanta, if you are concerned about losing weight you will need to consider how much sugar you are actually drinking each day. Popular fizzy drinks often contain quite a lot of sugar, so before you reach for that glass of grape Fanta, Australia based consumers should be aware how much sugar it contains.

How Much Sugar?
Most cola or Fanta grape bottles can be a little confusing when you are looking to see the sugar content. Since many drinks list the amount per 100 millilitres, yet bottles and cans can contain up to 500 millilitres this can often be deceiving. However, if you are looking to minimize your sugar, grape Fanta is actually one of the best choices. Recent research found that Coca-Cola and ginger beer are actually some of the worst offenders for high sugar content. You can expect to find that many fizzy drinks contain the equivalent of six teaspoons of sugar in a 330 millilitre serving. However, brand such as Old Jamaica ginger beer contains almost thirteen teaspoons of sugar in a serving.

This means that if you are used to drinking two or three cans of ginger beer each day, you will be consuming approximately 40 teaspoons or 200 grams of sugar in a day. This is more sugar than you would find in almost ten doughnuts. This is obviously not great if you are watching your weight.

So Can You Still Enjoy Grape Fanta?
Yes, of course, you can still enjoy your favourite Grape Fanta and still have a healthy balanced diet. The key to reducing your sugar intake is moderation. Of course, if you spend your entire day only consuming fizzy drinks, this will mean lots of sugar. However, if you restrict your intake to one Fanta grape bottle a day, you can still enjoy a great taste without consuming lots and lots of sugar.

According to World Health Organisation guidelines, your sugar intake should be less than 10% of your total daily calories. Ideally, this should be reduced to 5%. Estimates suggest that 5% of your daily intake is approximately 25 grams of sugar. This means that if you are consuming an average calorie diet of between 2,500 and 3,500 calories, you should restrict your intake to just one can a day.

Obviously controlling your intake is an important consideration for managing your weight. However, you will also need to consider eating healthy foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables and maintaining a regular exercise routine. Making these simple yet basic lifestyle changes will help you to manage your weight, feel healthier and still enjoy your favourite fizzy drink, of course in moderation!
